Outline of remaining ICE-RS requirements for 2007 Q3-Q4

This document outlines the remaining requirements for the ICE-RS project as outlined in the DEST funding application along with an overview of the tasks in order to meet the requirements.

Software functionality

  • To add features to the ICE software to aid in research workflows, chiefly indexing of full-text and document metadata.

  • Add full-text indexing with title and subject indexed for resource discovery.

  • Add an annotation / voting / approval system for collaborative editorial review processes (not peer review in the formal sense)

  • Allow documents to be labeled with states such as 'first draft' or 'submitted for examination' so that dashboard reporting systems can be used to summarize the state of a set of working documents.

Tasks

  • Implement full text indexing add context searching

  • Add functionality to capture DC meta-data.

This should allow users to add whatever is required and functionality to have predefined required meta data such as 'status' or author etc. This should also include tagging.

  • Server side version of ICE (requires multi-threading), within Apache and has tagging (as del.icio.us)

  • Threaded annotations (server and client side)

  • info button: summary page

  • Single document export

Investigative development and research

  • Demonstrate a proof of concept 'dashboard' for universities and research centres (done in harmony with the RAMP project's broader scope).

  • Develop proof-of-concept repository ingest for Fez / DSpace / Vital (the recommended Institutional Repository software coming out of the FRODO projects) for ICE documents.

  • Ensure that documents are inter-operable between ICE and DSWB. Digital Scholars Workbench -find info about status (retired)

  • Build a 'Deposit this' button for ICE to DSpace ingest

  • Build an ICE to VITAL single-click 'Deposit this' button

  • Demonstrate granular indexing of content within documents, for example being able to search research goals and compile summary documents.

  • Develop demonstration 'Dashboard' reporting for university service departments, based on a needs analysis.

  • A demonstration of institutional 'dashboard' functionality, allowing reporting on research activities from the corpus of research documentation, as well as via RAMP software.

  • Integrate with MAMS security projects, and RAMP to allow fine-grained control over access to resources and parts of resources. - Contact

Tasks

  • Add tagging functionality to ICE

  • Investigate SWORD as RAMP is not active enough after August release

  • Run workshop in September for SWROD implementation

  • Liaise with MAMS project staff about integration

  • Implement more polished version of ICE Vital module with the main code + documentation

  • Decide on what metadata to start storing, DC etc and using URI's for such things as authors names etc

  • Publish a dissertation to UNE's repository

Communication and Dissemination

  • Produce 'how to' guides for writing-up research using the ICE template.

  • Develop proof-of-concept ICE template to article / book formatters for one or more publishers or conferences.

  • Develop a set of guidelines for using bibliographic software with the ICE template.

  • Guides and training materials to enable universities to add ICE to their research workflows.

  • Hold introductory workshops with pilot users

  • A major ICE-RS event will be held to demonstrate project outcomes to the wider higher education community.

  • Marketing to the research community will be done via a series of campaigns primarily aimed at Research Centre and Faculty researchers and administrators.

Tasks

  • Write an ICE-RS toolkit to include:

How to guides for writing-up research using the ICE template

Guidelines for using bibliographic software with the ICE template

Guides and training materials to enable universities to add ICE to their research workflows

  • How to guide for creating a article and book formatting for e-JIST

  • IDEA 2007 roadshow August 2007

  • IDEA 2007 workshop in October

  • Clever Collection ICE workshop in November 2007

  • Enter the global 2007 Learning Impact Awards
